Now, Trump has issued a warning to India.
We have a very good relationship with India, but there is one problem. And that is, India is one of the highest tariff-paying countries in the world, which is a problem for the United States, US President Donald Trump has warned.
He said this in an interview with Breitbart News on Thursday (March 20).
Trump said, "I think they will probably reduce these tariffs significantly. But from April 2, we will impose the same tariffs on them that they collect on our products."
Meanwhile, Trump's comments could create new tensions in India-US trade. Especially if India does not move towards reducing tariffs, analysts believe that the trade conflict between the two countries could intensify.
Trump called the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor a "wonderful group" that works together against countries that want to undermine US interests in trade. He said, "We have strong partners in trade. But we will not accept any bad behavior from these partners. In many cases, our enemies treat us better than our friends."
Citing the examples of the European Union (EU) and India, Trump said that those who are considered our friends, such as the EU, treat us very badly in trade. Everyone also considers India as an ally, but they also impose high tariffs on our products.
On March 5, Trump criticized the high tariffs of various countries, including India, calling it "very unfair" and announced the imposition of reciprocal tariffs against countries that impose tariffs on US products from April 2. He said this in his address to a joint session of Congress, which was his first speech in his second term.
Trump said, "Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades. Now it's our turn. The EU, China, Brazil, India, Mexico and Canada - they all impose very high tariffs on our products. India charges over 100 percent duty on our cars, which is very unfair.
