The interim government of Syria will remain in power for a duration of five years.

Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Shara has signed a temporary constitution. This document, signed on Thursday, March 13, stipulates that Syria will operate under an Islamist governance framework.

The temporary constitution will remain in effect for a period of five years, according to reports from Reuters.

Previously, the former constitution was annulled in January. Interim President Ahmed al-Shara had indicated that it may take four to five years to conduct presidential elections.

Reuters reports that the temporary constitution will be valid for up to five years under the interim government, following the signing of this constitutional document three months after a significant offensive aimed at ousting Bashar al-Assad's regime.

A new committee will be established to draft a permanent constitution.
