A mineral agreement has been signed between the United States and Ukraine.
Ukraine and the United States have signed a mineral agreement. Through this, the United States will give preferential access to Ukraine's new mineral resources agreement and invest in the reconstruction of Kiev.
The agreement was signed in Washington on Wednesday (April 30) after months of negotiations. The mineral agreement will result in joint investments in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Reuters reports
Washington's relations with Ukraine have been strained since Donald Trump took office as president last January. The agreement is seen as a way for Trump and the White House to restore relations with Kiev. Ukrainian officials hope that the mineral agreement will maintain its continued support for military assistance against Russia.
A photo shared by the US Treasury Department's X Post shows US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko signing the agreement. According to the Treasury Department, the agreement is "a clear commitment by the Trump administration to an independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine."
Yurya Sviridenko wrote in the X Post that the deal would allow Washington to provide funding to Ukraine.
He added that “in addition to direct financial assistance, it could also create opportunities for new types of assistance. In particular, the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine.” However, Washington did not comment directly on the proposal.
Before the signing ceremony, Trump reiterated on Wednesday that the United States should get something in return for its assistance to Kiev. That is why this effort to secure a deal on Ukraine’s vast rare earth mineral resources is underway.
