Tensions between India and Pakistan, as stated by the United States

The United States has reiterated its condemnation of the recent gun attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. However, the US State Department did not comment on whether it was playing a role as a mediator to defuse the renewed tensions between India and Pakistan over the incident.

This week, a gunman killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which has sparked a fresh crisis between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors. New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for the killings. The Pakistani government, on the other hand, has strongly denied the allegations.

“The United States stands with India and strongly condemns all acts of terrorism,” said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce at a press conference.

“We express our condolences to those who have lost their lives. We pray for the recovery of those injured, and we call for the perpetrators of this heinous act to be brought to justice,” Bruce said. ’

At that time, when asked about President Trump’s first-term peace proposal between Pakistan and India, Bruce said, “I don’t want to comment on that. I won’t say anything more about that situation.”

He added, “The president and the secretary have said something. They have made their position clear. I will not speak on that.”

When asked about his role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan, Bruce said, “This is a rapidly evolving situation and we are monitoring it closely. Of course, we are not taking a position on the situation in Kashmir right now.”

On Tuesday (April 22), 26 people, including a Nepali national, were killed in an attack by armed groups in Pahalgam, a tourist resort in Indian-administered Kashmir. The Indian government blamed Pakistan for the attack, although Islamabad strongly denied the claim and called it a “false flag operation.”

The day after the attack, India took several steps on Wednesday, including canceling visas for citizens of the neighboring country and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan has also taken some tough measures in response to India's move. Islamabad announced several countermeasures on Wednesday, including cancelling visas for Indians, suspending trade with the country, and closing its airspace to Indian flights. The retaliatory measures have sparked renewed tensions between the two countries, which are feared to have escalated into a military conflict.
