The government reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the Peace Accord in the United Nations.
The Bangladesh government has reiterated its commitment to maintain constitutional guarantees to protect the rights of all citizens and to fully implement the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord.
Speaking at the session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Md. Abdul Khalek expressed the government's commitment.
He said this on Wednesday at the 24th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York, according to a press release received in Dhaka today.
The session in New York began on April 21 and will continue until May 2.
In his speech, Secretary Abdul Khalek informed the forum about the progress of the implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord. He also shed light on the land management system prevailing in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, which is mainly governed by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regulation Act of 1900.
At the session, he also emphasized the government's continued financial support and allocation to ensure infrastructural development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region and progress in the areas of education, healthcare, livelihood, sports, etc. Bangladesh's statement reiterated Bangladesh's constitutional commitment to protect and promote the unique local culture, heritage and traditions of ethnic groups and communities.
