The Trump administration is set to close nearly 30 embassies and consulates.

The Trump administration is going to make major changes in foreign diplomacy. They have decided to close about 30 US embassies and consulates in various countries. CNN reported this information citing internal State Department documents. The documents are in the possession of the US media.

The document calls for reducing the activities of US diplomatic missions in Somalia and Iraq. It also recommends changing the size of other diplomatic missions.

After coming to power for the second time, Donald Trump gave billionaire Elon Musk the responsibility of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Since taking office, the Trump administration has been moving towards reducing costs. Elon Musk is helping him in this. Due to this, they may decide to close embassies and consulates. However, there are doubts whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio will approve such a decision by the Trump administration.

CNN says, citing the documents, that the United States is going to close 10 embassies and 17 consulates. These are mostly located in Europe and Africa. Asia and the Caribbean are on the list.

CNN reported that the Trump administration is closing embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan. It will also close five consulates in France, two each in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one each in the United Kingdom, South Africa and South Korea.

The document states that the operations of the closed embassies will be carried out from embassies in neighboring countries.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Bruch did not respond to CNN's response to the issue. He suggested, "The White House and the president are working on the budget plan and you can see what they have submitted to Congress." Referring to the document, Bruch said, "You should not say anything in advance about the information that you have obtained from the leaked documents. It shouldn't even be reported.

CNN reported last March that the consulates were being closed, citing internal State Department documents.

CNN says embassies and consulates are essential to the State Department. They provide everything from visa processing to assistance to US citizens. They even collect information and send it to Washington, which serves as a diplomatic tool.
