The United States has proposed the informal recognition of areas controlled by Russia.

 

The United States has proposed a peace deal that would informally recognize almost all of the territory Russia has seized since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Washington expects Ukraine's response to this by Wednesday.

United States - The US media outlet Axioms reported this information on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

Axioms said that the proposal, presented last week, states that the United States would lift sanctions imposed on Russia since 2014 and return a small part of Kharkov that was occupied by Russia to Ukraine.

The proposal also states that the Zaporizhian nuclear power plant will be considered Ukrainian territory, but it will be operated by the United States. The electricity produced will be supplied to both Ukraine and Russia.

The political significance of this proposal: According to analysts, this proposal could create a difficult decision for Ukraine. On the one hand, while there is a chance to stop the war, on the other hand, it could effectively legitimize Russia's aggression. Moreover, there is uncertainty about the extent to which such recognition will be acceptable to the Ukrainian government and people.
