Brazil has not abandoned its hopes for the World Cup, setting a deadline.
Carlo Ancelotti has been in the news for the last few days. Brazil still wants him as their national team coach. However, complications with his contract and release from Real Madrid have not been resolved.
According to ESPN sources, the CBF has extended the waiting period for Ancelotti. They want to appoint a new coach by May 26. That is when Brazil will announce the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in June.
The CBF is currently waiting for Ancelotti to meet with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. It is believed that a meeting will be held in the next few days. Real Madrid is currently four points behind Barcelona in La Liga, and the two teams have a crucial El Clasico match on May 11.
Ancelotti's current contract runs until June 2026. However, if he leaves the club on his own, Real Madrid will not be obliged to pay him the full amount. According to club rules, a coach is paid six months' salary if he is fired. But if he leaves voluntarily, he does not get the benefit.
A source said that if Real Madrid "involuntarily" leaves Ancelotti, then the Brazilian Confederation would have to pay compensation. An alternative path is open, with Madrid perhaps paying part of his salary and Brazil paying the rest - a compromise that could be reached.
Although Ancelotti is still the CBF's first choice, they are also considering alternatives due to uncertainty over him. They include Al Hilal coach Jorge Jesus and Palmeiras' Abel Ferreira.
Ancelotti's last league match for Real Madrid against Real Sociedad will be played on May 24 or 25. The situation may be clearer after that.
