The Foreign Minister of Iran visits India amidst the conflict with Pakistan.

 

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in India to deepen strategic ties amid the war with Pakistan. He will co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting on Thursday (May 8), The Economic Times reported.


Araghchi's visit marks an important milestone during the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Treaty of Friendship.


Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal welcomed the Iranian Foreign Minister and highlighted the importance of the event.


Jaiswal said on social media, "A warm welcome to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on his visit to New Delhi for the India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting. The 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Treaty of Friendship is an opportunity to review and enhance bilateral cooperation." ’


The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi is coming to New Delhi on a two-day visit, where he will co-chair the 20th Joint Commission meeting with India.


The statement also said that this is Araghchi’s first visit to India after taking oath as Iran’s Foreign Minister in August 2024.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit to New Delhi comes at a time when the nuclear-armed countries are at war. On April 22, 26 people were killed in a gun attack in Pahalgaon, Indian-administered Kashmir. India blamed Pakistan for the attack and launched a missile attack on the country on Tuesday night. Several casualties were reported in Pakistan. In retaliation, Pakistan claimed that several Indian aircraft and drones were shot down in retaliatory strikes.
