What is the cost of the five Indian fighter jets that were 'downed' by Pakistan?
Pakistan has claimed to have shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets, including three French multirole Rafale jets, a twin-engine Russian MiG-29 and a Su-30 fighter jet. The ‘Zong Group and Geo Television Network’ program reported that India had to pay $963.38 million or about 271.67 billion Pakistani rupees to get the planes.
While the current price of a Rafale jet is $288 million, the market value of a MiG-29 in India was about $48 million in 2020. On the other hand, the market value of a Su-30 fighter jet is $50 million.
Talking about the price of the Rafale jet, numerous prominent Indian media outlets and the Bulgarian military reported on May 4 that India had finalized a $7.5 billion deal with France on April 28 this year to buy 26 Rafale jets. This is the largest defense deal ever signed between the two countries.
The cost of one Rafale jet is $288.46 million (Pakistani 81.345 billion taka) and the cost of three machines is $865.38 million or about 244.04 billion Pakistani rupees.
Indian media outlets NDTV, Times Now and the Bulgarian military have recently published separate reports on the cost of the Su-30 fighter jet, stating that its cost per unit is about $50 million (Pakistani 14.1 billion taka).
The cost of one unit of the MiG-29 aircraft is about $48 million (13.54 billion taka) per carrier for India.
The Moscow Times published on July 3, 2020, citing the Indian Ministry of Defense, that New Delhi has approved the purchase of 21 MiG-29 aircraft for about $1 billion. That is, the cost of one such aircraft is about $48 million per unit.
