Zelensky revealed the topics of discussion with Trump at the Vatican.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he discussed air defense systems and sanctions on Russia with Donald Trump during a sideline meeting at Pope Francis' funeral at the Vatican. He called the meeting "the best ever" between the two.
This information was reported by the British news agency Reuters in a report.
Volodymyr Zelensky also said that he and the US president agreed that a 30-day ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow was the first right step towards ending the war in Ukraine.
He said that he raised the issue of sanctions during a surprise meeting with Trump last week and that Trump's response to the question was "very strong." However, Zelensky did not specify what Trump's response was.
He also said that a significant mineral deal signed between the two countries on Wednesday was mutually beneficial and would allow Ukraine to protect its own territory and people, as well as future US investments.
The agreement signed between the two countries will give the United States preferential access to new Ukrainian mineral deals and open up U.S. investment in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Zelensky said that at least the money would be reinvested and would not flow out of Ukraine.
The agreement aims to establish a fund to manage investments and retain profits. “The plan’s supervisory board will consist of 3-3 Ukrainian and 3-3 U.S. appointees, who will elect its director,” Zelensky said.
