Fire at a drug rehabilitation center in Mexico results in 12 fatalities.

At least 12 people were killed and three others injured in a fire at a drug rehabilitation center in central Mexico, the state attorney general's office in Guanajuato said Sunday (June 1). CBS News reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. However, drug cartels operating in the area have been accused of attacking such centers in the past. It is alleged that these cartels want to force patients into their groups.

The state attorney general's office in Guanajuato said in a statement that investigators are collecting evidence from the scene and interviewing witnesses. Through this, efforts are being made to find out the cause of this tragic incident.

At least 9 people were killed in a shooting at another drug rehabilitation center in Mexico's troubled Sinaloa state in April of this year. It is believed that the patients were killed when they rejected the drug cartels' offer.

According to the CBS News report, the Mexican government has been fighting crime since 2006. According to official sources, about 480,000 people have died in violence in the North American country since then. Another 120,000 are missing.
